Learning Japanese with Manga(Beginner Level)-DEMO
Today’s expression is でも(DEMO).
You might know ‘demo’ meaning ‘but’ at the beginning of a sentence. But today’s DEMO is used with a noun(or noun+proposition) and it means ‘ …or something like that.’
Let us show you an example from manga.
でも is made from 2 hiraganas, (て 、も)so it is not too difficult to write DEMO in hiragana♪
で(DE)needs 2 dots at top right of て(TE).
By adding DEMO after a noun, it sounds like your suggestion is flexible and you are welcome to change the idea, the option is open.
For example…
おちゃでも のみませんか?(Ocha demo nomimasenka?)
Would you like a cup of tea(but it doesn’t have to be tea really, tea or anything like that.)?
のみます(NOMIMASU)ーのみませんか?(NOIMASENKA?)
(Shall we drink? — ‘MASENKA’ is used to make a suggestion with any other verbs.)
ex. たべます(TABEMASU)- たべませんか?(TABEMASENKA?)
いきます(IKIMASU)- いきませんか?(IKIMASENKA?)
Let’s make some sentences with noun+demo and make a suggestion!
- えいがでも みませんか?(Eiga demo mimasenka?)
- おみやげでも かいませんか?(Omiyage demo kaimasenka?)
- まんがでも よみませんか?(Manga demo yomimasenka?)
